Help with cutting fiberglass

Postby Frank on Sun Oct 25, 2009 3:45 pm

I am aware that it makes fibers that you really don't want in your lungs. Lacking face masks, I got around that by wetting the area so that all the dust would be caught in the water and never released into the air I was breathing. That part worked well, but I found that the fiberglass driveway marker rods dull hacksaws like nobody's business. Two rods and it's time for a new blade. Safety aside (I know I need to get a mask), what's wrong? Should I just avoid fence materials, is it the water-and-fiberglass mud that's ruining the blade, or do I just need to get a better cutting implement? Or something else? Help please.

Bumping.
This shouldn't be too hard of a question to answer for anyone who uses fiberglass cores. If you do, how do you cut it? I've got some Christmas presents to make and would really like to know how it should be done. Anyone know?

well, I'd say your first issue is that you are not using pvc...but I think that's just me.

I've never worked with fiberglass, but I think some of the guys I know duct tape the area to be cut to reduce splintering...don't know what to tell ya beyond that
