So here are mah questions;

1. what core should i use for the flat bladed side

2. How will i curve pvc pipe and make it stay on the crested moon side

3. would you think it would be more effective as a 4 1/2 foot long pole arm or as a 3 foot swordish thing[/img]

making the flat head would in practice be identical to making a standard axe-head. blue camping foam can work rather well as a base core for stiffness, but adding in some open-cell is usually a good idea for softening blows overall. curving the pvc on the opposite side might not be quite that practical, however... if you can make the crescent moon piece entirely out of foam, it might limit your abilities to use the weapon to trip people, but otherwise would make it fairly safe to swing normally.

i'd personally advise making the pole portion at least 3.5-4 feet in length, not including the shovelhead or crescent blade. at that length, it'd be a decent approximation, and give you some decent range. don't forget the courtesy padding on the pole section, though- if you've even taken a pvc haft to the skull, you know exactly what i'm talking about.
