new axe design

Talk about boffer construction, fighting, ideas, etc.

new axe design

Postby Darwin_green on Mon Dec 03, 2007 3:50 pm

well, I just started experimenting with heating and bending PVC to make curved blades and what not.

So i devised a neat way make a simple ax.

bend the pipe in a crescent about where the head should be. Kind like a kopesh(egyption sythe sword) with a longer handle.

I agree, that is very nice. All the power of an axe, but the ability to pull swords or shields out of the way. If you went florentine with them, it would be devastating.

well initially i wanted to fill in that gap with some extra foam and duct tape. But I ran out of material.

basically i goal was to make a boffer ax that was light and durable.

With the way I've seen shields used, it would be very hard to actually pull a shield to the side from the front. If you did you would have to use a sword in the other hand that was long enough to get a fast thrust in when you cleared the shield out of the way.

What an axe gives you is an advantage of getting around the shield on a straight hit without having to snap the wrist.

how did you heat the PVC...I was thinking about making an elven recurve sword. On the note of florentine, if you used two of those with 8 inch handles and a longer blade it would be like the guy from that god of war game. It might take some practice to get used to but it would look tight in the end

heating the PVC is easy, the quickest way to bend it, is to insulate it with something, like a bigger PVC pipe, then pour boiling water over for like an hour, then just bend it

an electric stove in a room with good ventilation is all you need. the key is in using indirect heat, as in holding the PVC a centimeter or two above the stove and letting the stove heat the air around the PVC

yeah, I just made a Danish axe last week that's about 4-5" in length. But ,I bent it over like a candy cane so I don't think It'll last more than a few sparring sessions.

but depending on if I like that design or not I might make another axe similar to a Bardiche axe soon.
