New Laptop's up and running.

Talk about anything that doesn't fit into the other catergories.

New Laptop's up and running.

Postby DoomRater on Sat Jan 17, 2009 10:08 pm

The cheap thing came with gOS, a rather buggy distro of Linux, and very unfortunate as I didn't really mind trying to make it reliable. Whatever, setting up XP was a bitch! I needed a hotfix to install my audio drivers and I only discovered this 20 hours into working on the thing. Oh yeah, my first attempt at an install left the hard drive as drive E:. Weird.

My old laptop was set aside for diagnostic and music purposes, so I called it Zwi. The new laptop fills a lot more needs and can do more, but will still play a lot of critical roles. I was going to go with a UAC tech base theme, but I can't get away from my OoT love. Any ideas for a name?

Screenshots of the welcome screen to come soon. It's still very shoddy and was done to cheer me up while I solved the issue of the audio driver.

Congratulations getting the machine up and running.

That is odd that it pushed the hard drive to E:. If something like that happens again, you can switch drive letters in XP.

Right-click on My Computer
Choose Manage
Click: Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management.
Right-click on any of the drives and click: Change Drive Letter and Paths...

This will let you reorder all your drives.

As for names; I always go to www.behindthename.com and then think about a word that my new computer reminds me of, and then search the descriptions for that word and pick the name associated with it.

Actually, try doing that on a system drive and it will tell you that you cannot. In fact, I went and found a way to change the letter of the system drive using the registry, and when I did change it to C:, the laptop would no longer boot! And so I reinstalled with the drive letters in the same spot. This was of course before the 16 hour hell that was attempting to install audio drivers. It turned out I needed a hotfix in order for XP to recognize the audio card. After that everything went smoothly. Well, maybe there's some hidden hotkey that makes the laptop turn off immediately that I need to avoid, but that's it.

Current network name is UAC-5261746572, just hex code for Rater. I went and copied over Starcraft images and an ISO image tool, all my Doom tools, a little bit of artwork, and a very critical section of my music. Might think about copying my entire Art folder over.

Ahaha~

So I no longer own the netbook in this thread. Instead I have now a Dell Inspiron 1521, which is arguably much more powerful. I put my Vista Ultimate SP1 on it, turned off all the skins and used the default Windows look, and it works wonderfully for what I need it to do, including record video form my eyeToy, play back instructionals from the internet in class, play complicated music currently not supported by my music player, and even run Second Life in an emergency pinch! I need to add Doom editing to it, some images, an ISO image maker (so I can "play" games/CDs from the thrift store, among other things), and finally that one tool allowing me access to networks more often. you know, just because.

I need to reload my home computer running Vista. It's been slowly, but steadily getting more sluggish. Now it's to the point where it takes about 15 seconds to open basic programs and even moving about in explorer has minor delays. I keep my computer quite clean (compared to amateur users), so I'm a little disappointed with Vista. Hopefully, Windows 7 will greet us with a bit less BS and a bit more solidarity.

If you're looking to optimize you new computer, check out these tips: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2110595,00.asp.

Some are obvious, but a couple are a bit more clever.

Kinda surprised they absolutely advise against Task Scheduler. That's one of the first things I turn off!

I've only ever used it for running a scan disk once every month. But even then, it was never really needed. Most maintenance programs each have their own schedulers these days.
