THAT GODDAMN BAT

Postby DoomRater on Fri Jun 19, 2009 7:10 pm

Oh my god what the hell is wrong with that thing. It takes everything out of my hands. EVERYTHING. I mean about the only thing it WON'T swipe from you is the dot. It even took the bridge from me four times as I was trying to acquire the dot.

Well when I finally got the dot over to the special wall and saw the decorated room, it was pretty cool. Plus "duck mode", rofl. Was it Strongbad who made that description famous? I don't even know.

That sounds like something Strongbad would say. Although, gamers have been calling them ducks ever since the game came out.

I've beat all three difficulty levels on an actual Atari, though I've never got the microdot. Maybe I should try for it.

As for the bat, if I remember correctly, you can keep items safe by dropping them off inside the yellow castle. The bat can't pick them up there.

Also, I think the bat always tries to grab and item from you before picking one up off the ground if both items are in the same room. So, take two items with you, one that you need (the bridge) and one you can lose (a key to an unlocked castle).

Pick one up, move it to the next room, go back, pick up the other one and move it to the next room, etc. When the bat shows up and you're carrying the key, just let him fly off with it. If you're holding the bridge, try to run back and pick up the key, so the bat will take the key instead.

That might give you enough time to get through the dark maze.

You can also catch the bat and you can still use the item it's holding! It will struggle free eventually though, so you have to be quick with it.

In this adventure remake, the bat never wiggled free of my grasp, and could take MULTIPLE items. So that strategy didn't work too well. HOWEVER I could run off the edge of the screen and run back and he would be gone, due to him not really flying around the level.

They're either not trying to get the bat accurate to the original, which is acceptable, or they're not sure of how the original bat reacted, which seems doubtful.

I don't think you can make a remake without playing the original for months.

Well, on the page you'll see a mentioning of a 2.0 version that will add classic bat behavior. Who knows how long that will be before it's done, but I'll keep in mind those strategies for the original bat behavior.

Sometimes you can get the bat itself stuck in the Yellow Castle, but you have to be extremely lucky and get him going in a straight top-down pattern. If he goes diagonally, he'll eventually fly out the door. But if you can just leave him in there with an item you don't need, then you're all set.
